Higher National Diploma (HND) in Healthcare Level 4/5
Higher National Diploma In Healthcare Practice
(Integrated Health and Social Care)
Introduction
Pearson awards are work-related qualifications for students taking their first steps into employment, or for those already in employment and seeking career development opportunities. Such awards provide progression into the workplace either directly or via study at University/College, and are designed to meet employer’s needs.
Pearson (BTEC) Higher National qualifications are widely recognised by industry and higher education as the principal vocational qualification at Level 4 and Level 5. Pearson Higher National qualifications in Healthcare Practice are developed in collaboration with a wide range of students, employers, and higher education providers, and fully reflect the relevant Subject Benchmark Statements.
There has been input from relevant professional bodies, to ensure alignment with recognised professional standards. There is a greater emphasis on employer engagement and work readiness. Pearson Higher National qualifications in Healthcare Practice are designed to reflect this increasing need for high quality professional and technical education pathways at Level 4 and Level 5, thereby providing students with a clear line of sight to employment and/or to progression to a degree at Level 6.
Pearson Higher National qualifications in Healthcare Practice have been developed to focus on providing a range of core units, each with a clear purpose, so there is something to suit each student’s choice of programme and future progression plans. Key features include:
- Fully revised content that is closely aligned with the needs of employers, professional bodies and higher education for a skilled future workforce.
- Learning outcomes mapped against Professional Body standards, where appropriate.
- Assessments and projects chosen to help students progress to the next stage (this means some are set by Stratford College London to meet local needs, while others are set by Pearson).
- A core of skills and understanding that is common to all students and aligned to the Framework of Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ).
- There is support provided at Stratford College London for our students and tutors including Schemes of Work and Sample Assessment Materials to enhance quality delivery and assessment of the Pearson Higher National qualifications in Healthcare Practice programme.
ASSESSMENT
Stratford College has a clearly defined Assessment Policy. It is relevant, in the context of this document, to note the Assessment Policy as:
- Students are provided with opportunities to develop an understanding of, and the necessary skills to demonstrate, good academic practice. The volume, timing and nature of assessment enable students to demonstrate the extent to which they have achieved the intended learning outcomes. Feedback on assessment is timely, constructive and developmental.
- Through inclusive design wherever possible, and through individual reasonable adjustments wherever required, assessment tasks provide every student with an equal opportunity to demonstrate their achievement.
- That the assessment process follows the guidelines set by the awarding organisation (Pearson) in its design and management. The College is regularly reviewed to ensure its academic standards are appropriate and that learners are afforded every opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge. Detailed information on the HND Assessment mode and regulations are provided in the College BTEC HND Assessment Policy.
Assessors must show how they have reached their decisions using the criteria in the assessment records. When a student has completed all the assessments for a unit, the assessment team can give a grade for the unit.
This grade is based on the highest level the student is judged to have met for all the criteria.
- To achieve a pass, a student must have met all the pass criteria for the learning outcomes, demonstrating that they have covered the unit content and achieved Level 4 or 5 of the national framework.
- To achieve a merit, a student must have met all the merit criteria (and the pass criteria) through high performance in each Learning Outcome.
- To achieve a distinction, a student must have met all the distinction criteria (and the pass and merit criteria), demonstrating outstanding performance across the whole unit. A pass cannot be awarded just because the student has completed all the assignments. Students must meet all of the pass criteria. If they do not, their grade should be reported as ‘unclassified’.
LEARNING AND TEACHING
The Learning and Teaching Strategy of the College aims to build independent learners, with students taking increasing responsibility for their own learning. College staffs are responsible for enabling such learning. Ultimately students should leave Stratford College London inspired, and capable of life-long learning, building upon the foundations and structure built through our programmes.
Various approaches to learning have been adopted to achieve this aim:
- Direct contact (e.g. lectures, seminars, tutorials, guest speakers, external visits, case studies, or workshops),
- Collaborative learning (e.g. group projects, discussion forums, or debate),
- Independent learning.
The choice of which approach to adopt to achieve a given learning outcome or objective is left to the tutor, who will select the most appropriate approach on the basis of developing creativity in the thinking of the students by challenging existing precepts. Providing context is important in this regard, such as through using case studies, to expose the students to multiple realities in which the theories may apply.
The College Learning and Teaching Strategy – see separate discrete document – has been developed to ensure that students will:
- be able to learn and work independently;
- develop organisational skills;
- be able to adapt to changing circumstances;
- develop transferable skills from one context to another;
- be able to communicate their ideas in writing, speaking and practically;
- Develop team-working and leadership skills.
